Before going back into the room overflowing with armed men, Kimberly knew she needed a plan. As soon as they realized the newcomers to the town were planning to leave in the dead of night, there would be a swift and dangerous reaction. The thought of something happening to her brother, especially since she had been the one to lead him to the town, was more than she could take. Her hands were already trembling. As she stepped to the door, her mind made up, it swung open and caught her off guard. She stumbled backward, and a man emerging she recognized as Cletus from the front gates.

She was on edge, thinking quickly and stumbling a little farther to make it look as though she had been caught off balance. She fell on the ground, pain searing through her tailbone but giving her the moment she needed to reach into her boot and pull out the pepper spray without his noticing. He dragged over to her, offering a hand to help her get off the ground, but Kimberly wasn’t about to risk contact with the man. Instead, she climbed it to her feet on her own, taking several steps away from him in the process. He did not look deterred in the slightest, though, his eyes moving up and down her body in a fashion that made her stomach roll.

“I was wondering where you had gotten off to. There is a whole room of people excited to meet you and your family, but you shouldn’t be out here on your own,” Cletus said.

“Thanks, but I am not a social person. I think I am just going to head back to the apartment and get things ready to leave in the morning.”

The man shook his head, an evil smile forming on his lips as he locked eyes with her. “Come on now, why don’t you want to stay? I bet we can make this place real nice for you.”

“You mean like you have for the other women being held captive here? Thanks, Cletus, but I think I will pass.”

For a split second, the man’s smile faltered. She knew the comment had taken him by surprise. His quick reaction time, though, confirmed what the elderly woman had told Kimberly earlier. They were keeping the women who passed through the town and killing off the men. She felt like she was going to be sick. There was no time to think about her own safety, though, when it was her brother’s life on the line. With one hand tucked behind her back, the small can of pepper spray nestled in her palm with her finger on the depressor, Kimberly moved to walk past the man and head back for the rec center.

“You stupid woman, it’s not up to you,” Cletus snapped.

He lunged to the right in an effort to grab Kimberly, but she was ready for him. Whipping her hand around, she sprayed the pungent mixture directly into both of his eyes. He squealed like a little girl and stumbled away from her.
